52 Projects Wk 11 – Bird House Pt 2

The Finished Product!!

I really enjoyed working on painting the bird house this week.  It took about 5 days to get it done in my free time, because of the need to wait for the various coats of paint to dry.  The final lacquer was dried just before we left for the block for the Easter long weekend.  Phewww!

I also enjoyed taking various photos of it once it was in the tree, which you can see down below!!.

We found an excellent spot to place it!  I didn’t want to drill into a living tree or cut down any large branches or trunks, so we spent a lot of time brainstorming how we would attach it and where.

In the end we found the perfect spot.  We found a tree where a large thick branch had died and broken off some time ago.  We sawed off the jagged edge and made a flat surface to put the house directly on top of it – much like putting a bird house on a tall post.  No drilling into living tree trucks or attaching wires around branches.  Perfect!  The wood was still solid enough to secure the house with screws, but at a spot where it won’t be growing anymore anyway.

Also it is high enough to be more appealing to the birds, yet we can easily climb into the nook in the branches and look in to see what may be in there!

Remember how I discovered last week that I hated sawing wood?  Well I did the sawing for this, and you know what??  I quite enjoyed it in this setting.  It was straight sawing.  It was really hard physical work and it was great! I got it done quite quickly, much to D’s surprise!
But before this job, we were working on putting up the shed and D asked me to saw off a couple of small branches that were in the way.  I said “don’t you remember how much I said I hated sawing last week??  Two weeks in a row?!!  What are you doing to me??!!”  Laughed!  And then got stuck into it!

Enjoy the next few shots showing views from different angles, close ups and full landscape views.  The last one is “spot the bird house”.  It is taken from right next to our van.  I think it is easy to see, but it does show how the house blends in quite well.  Of course, not as much as could, but I had to have some creativity thrown into the project as well!!  :)

Can you spot it in the last photo???

The birds have a white picket fence. Very cool, and just in time for spring. Keep us posted on the tenant situation.

I hope we do too soon. You never know. But we are heading into winter! We are planning to look up about the birds in the area and find out about their activities. They seem to want to fly in and out of the holes in the trees no matter what time of year, so we are hopeful.

I agree with my husband; I love the white picket fence! Your pictures put such a smile on my face. I've always wanted to make a bird house. I've seen some really awesome hand painted ones in a gallery. I will definitely be trying this!

I agree -- it's beautiful. The fence is adorable, the green pops and looks really great. Nice job. And as per Jane, I'm getting inspired by everyone. Maybe we can plan a week where we each try one of the others' projects? That'll give me an excuse to use the oils I bought after seeing Jane's tiles.

Thanks Jane and Kablooey.

Jane - did you see my latest post on last weekends kayaking? I posted a photo of our new kayaks. Would love to see what kind you use!

Kablooey - You don't need an excuse to use the oils, just do it!! Give it a go, I want to see!

I always say nature finds a way... and judging by the location I think that trunk was designated to hold a gorgeous bird house. Love it!

How great is this! And in the gum trees ... they really speak to me. Absolutely beautiful! This is inspiration for me to try and build some houses for my garden in Mexico. Can't wait to see what you are up to next.
