52 Projects Wk 20 – Access Databases

My project this week has been a BIG learning curve.  I discovered the wonders of Microsoft Access this year and this week saw me start my very own from scratch.

It all began when, at the beginning of the year, D helped me to create a database for my teaching.  It has been absolutely amazing having a database designed exclusively for my needs.  As the year has gone by, we have continued to add to it and improve.  And under the tutelage of D,  I have gradually learnt how to do a lot of things myself.

With the onset of my new way of eating, I decided I wanted to do up a database of successful recipes etc.  So, this week, that is what I have done.  Of course I have still needed D’s help, but I have done all the work and worked it all out for myself first before calling out for help.

In the recipes are a lot of details that I needed to create a variety of tables for such as recipe quantities, protein and calorie etc details, servings, instructions, type of meal, what recipe book it comes from etc etc.  The database also includes a list of ingredients, weekly menu planning, snack ideas and measurements.  It also includes, very importantly, a list of things that I want to create and add to the database soon!

It has been really exciting and satisfying for me to be able to do it myself.  And my Access knowledge has skyrocketed from setting this database up from scratch.  I still have a lot to learn but this has been a highly satisfying, enjoyable and rewarding 52 Project!

Here are some screen shots.  The first is the current layout of each individual recipe.  The second is the design mode for the recipes – what you use to create the layout.  And to get these photos, I learnt how to take screen shots, paste them into paint and save them into images.  Awesome!!

PS.  I was quite late getting last week’s 52 Projects in .  So, if you want to check out the exposure photography I’m learning how to do click here.  The photos were taken on our special night away at the Grand Hotel!

Such a fabulous job you are doing! Sounds exciting and fun to learn. They probably have a program for the mac. Would be so useful for so many things. So much to learn .. so little time .. ha ha.

I am so NOT a technical person (ask Breen). I think it's wonderful that you learned this. I love the idea of organizing recipes this way!

As a computer dolt, I am VERY impressed by what you've learned. And how great to hear that you're figuring out more and more as you go.
